Overview
If you have one afternoon and want the archipelago properly, this is the trip to take. Ships leave Strandvagen through the day, so you fit the water around your plans rather than the other way round, and the fare is the most affordable way onto the archipelago with a live guide beside you.
You board a working classic ship rather than a modern launch. M/S Angantyr, M/S Evert Taube, M/S Östanå I and S/S Stockholm all run these routes, and the one you sail on depends on the length you pick. Each has a heated saloon with wide windows and an open deck above, so you can sit in the sun or out of the wind and change your mind halfway.
The guide is what makes this better than a ferry ticket. Commentary runs live in English the whole way, covering the islands you pass, the summer-house culture on the rocks and the shipping channel you are sitting in. It is the kind of detail that turns a pretty view into a place you understand.
Choose your length by how much of the day you want to give it. Ninety minutes covers the inner channels and has you back for lunch; the 2.5 and 3 hour sailings push east towards the middle band, where the islands thin out and the Baltic opens in front of you.
Itinerary
- Board at Strandvagen. Berths 14, 15 and 16, with the numbers painted on the quay. Arrive ten to fifteen minutes early and pick your seat.
- Out through the inner channels. Past Djurgården and the city waterfront, with the commentary starting almost as soon as you cast off.
- Into the archipelago. Fjäderholmarna, Stora Höggarn and Tegelön, summer houses on the granite either side of you.
- Turn and come back. The longer sailings run further east before turning. Every option returns to the berth you left from.
This is a cruise rather than an island-hop, so you see the islands from the water rather than walking on them. If you would rather go ashore, the Vaxholm ferry excursion on Stockholm Archipelago tours gives you ninety minutes in a real archipelago town.

Meeting point and logistics
You leave from Strandvagen, berths 14, 15 and 16 — ten minutes on foot from Ostermalmstorg or a short ride on tram 7. Your confirmation names the berth, and the numbers are painted on the quay, so it is hard to get wrong.
Give yourself ten to fifteen minutes before departure, because several ships share this stretch of water and the early arrivals get the open deck. Once aboard you have a cafeteria selling sandwiches, coffee, beer and wine for the whole sailing, plus free WiFi and restrooms.
Families do well on this one: it is sheltered water, there is somewhere warm to sit, and a foldable stroller is welcome on the main deck. Boarding is down a gangway rather than step-free, so if you need level access, ask the crew when you book — our visiting guide sets out what each boat offers.

We sat right at the front and the waves caught us, which is worth knowing before you choose your seat. The explanations were excellent.
