Stockholm Archipelago Tours by Season
The season decides more here than the weather forecast does. It sets which boats run, how long the light lasts, and whether the island you were heading for has anyone on it.
Summer, June to August
Everything runs. The guided cruises go several times a day, the kayak and sailing operators are at full capacity, and the island inns are open. Water temperatures reach the point where swimming is a pleasure rather than a dare.
The light is the real draw. In June the sun sets close to ten and the sky never fully darkens, which gives you a second evening after dinner. Book ahead in July — the small-group trips cap at eight or nine people and they fill.
Early autumn, September and October
The best-kept secret of the archipelago. The cruises still run, the water is at its warmest after a summer of sun, and the crowds have gone back to work. Forests turn and the low light is better for photographs than anything July offers.
From mid-September a 30-day or longer SL travelcard is valid on Waxholmsbolaget at no extra cost, so the public ferry network becomes effectively free. This is also foraging season — blueberries, lingonberries and chanterelles, as covered on where and what to eat in the Stockholm Archipelago.
Winter, November to March
The guided sightseeing cruises keep running with daily departures, and a heated saloon with large windows is a fine place to watch a grey Baltic go past. The kayak and sailing operators stand down until spring. Island inns largely close, so plan to eat in the city.
What you get instead is emptiness and a completely different palette — bare granite, black water, and low sun for the few hours it appears. Dress properly and it is memorable rather than merely cold.
Spring, April and May
The archipelago wakes up slowly. Cruises run, the kayak season opens as the water warms, and the islands green up through May. The SL ferry concession runs to the end of April.
May is quietly one of the best months to come. The light is already long, the tourist season has not started, and everything that matters is open.

What to wear, by season
Layers all year, and a windproof outer layer whatever the month. Summer on open water is cooler than summer in the city by several degrees. In winter add a hat and gloves, because the wind across the Baltic finds everything.
